NPR: Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me!
I love this weekly quiz from the United States. It's a
laid back look at the weeks news with plenty of good humour. If, like
me, you have to occasionally fight off some anti-american feelings then
this is the perfect antidote. Feed

Open Source Another podcast from the United States, presented by Christopher Lydon,
courtesy of the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown
University. This is just a wonderful show that discusses all manner of
cultural and political subjects in an accessible way that doesn't patronise its audience. Feed

Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Reviews
Broadcast on Friday on BBC Five Live this is regularly
entertaining. I don't even go to the cinema much but just enjoy
listening to this double act and the hilarious 'Kermodian Rants'.
That's not to say I always agree with Mark Kermode's analyses but I'm
consistently entertained, informed or both. Feed

Litopia
Litopia is a kind of community
for writers, agents and others involved in the publishing industry
established by literary agent Peter Cox. The do a short daily podcast
and a longer weekly 'After Dark' episode that I regularly enjoy. I'm
not a writer, at least not yet, but I still have a chuckle at the
'After Dark' discussions. Feed |

Morning Becomes Eclectic
A weekly radio show from KCRW
radio station based in Southern California that presents a live
band in the studio every week. Okay, so not every act is going to
change your life but the quality has been pretty consistent so far. In
fact Jesca Hoop's performances on the show are actually better than the
studio album she put out. Feed |

|
The Onion Radio News
A daily faux-news bulletin from the Onion news
organisation. With the amount of material they put out there's no way
they can be hilarious every time and there's a few Amreican references
but I guarantee you'll laugh at some of them. "The Amish Give Up" was
one of my favourites. Feed |

KEXP Music That Matters Another
podcast from an American radio station, this one based in Seattle.
About an hour long and with a varied playlist this is a useful way to
keep up with what's out there. It has an indie feel to it but I've
heard dance and hip hop tracks too. Good stuff. Feed |

Council on Foreign Relations
The Council on Foreign
Relations is a high-powered American think tank that publishes a
quarterly journal that I sometimes buy and a weekly podcast produced
with the UK's Economist. It has an establishment bias but it's an
important window on the foreign policy thinking that drives the global
agenda. Feed |

Science Magazine Podcast
There are plenty of good science podcasts on the web and this is
one of them. It covers stories that are featured in the magazine and
assumes a somewhat scientifically literate audience. Feed |

Grammar Girl Like
most British educated people of my generation I didn't learn a lot of
grammar as it was dropped from the curriculum for being 'too hard and
boring'. So finally I found out when to use 'who' or 'whom' thanks to
Grammar Girl's quick and dirty tips for better writing. God bless her.

Le Show (Harry Shearer)
For those that don't know, Harry Shearer is a comic actor
who does many of the voices on the Simpsons and starred in the film
'This is Spinal Tap'. He also does a weekly radio show consisting of
sketches focusing on American politics and culture generally. Even
though I don't get every reference it still makes me laugh. Feed |
 | Collins and Herring
I first heard Andrew Collins standing in for Kermode on 5
Live and he plugged his podcast so I thought I'd check it out. It's
fair to say that there are adult themes throughout, mostly courtesy of Richard Herring, as they look over
the week's news but as long as you're not easily offended there's some
clever comedy too. Feed |
 | Adam and Joe
Andrew Collins mentioned these two on his podcast with
Herring and i remembered seeing a few bits and pieces of them over the
years. Very funny. Nice rapport, good features, great jingles. Feed |
 | This American Life
This is a weekly audio documentary series from Chicago that
is about as good as it gets in my opinion. It just maintains an
exceptionally high standard of interesting and amusing features.
Some of my favourites include the Ghost of Bobby Dunbar, Remember Me, The Friendly Man, and This I Used To Believe. Feed |
