Food Links
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
After
deciding to do a food links page I procrastinated so long I became a
vegetarian (again) in the meantime. I haven't missed meat as much as
expected this time but it does mean that most of the links I would have
put on here aren't relevant to me anymore. Hopefully this page will
grow in time...

Technical Stuff
Glycemic Index (GI) This
is a basically measure of how different foods digest and release energy
after being consumed. The idea is that low GI foods make you feel full
for longer and it seems to work for me. I've linked to the wikipedia
article and you can find a list of GI values for various foods here. There's plenty more information out there if you search for it.
Vegetable Steaming Times |
Quick Green Flageolet Soup This
was okay, I didn't use the cream and used vegetable stock instead of
chicken broth. Not a life-changer but it was reasonably tasty and
probably healthy.
Morrocan Mint Tea Love
this, it's delicious. The recipe calls for spearmint and I'm not sure
if that's the species you buy in supermarkets or not but it works fine.
Pesto alla Genovese
I discovered the recipe for
this in a Valentina Harris cookery book I bought in a charity shop.
I've searched the web and found a recipe by the same lady that's nearly
exactly the same. In the book she specifies '36 leaves of basil' which
is a bit vague anyway because leaves are all different sizes. I
recommend cooking it through for a few seconds before adding the
pasta.
Nasi Goreng
I grew up with a lot of indonesian food in Holland; satay, steamed buns that made your eyes water, lumpia,
all sorts of treats. Here's a simple fried rice recipe. All the asian
condiments are all easily found in Chinese shops. I substitute the
chicken and prawns with veggies obviously.
